Community Involvement
Volunteers, donors, and pro-bono work fuel many nonprofit organizations, and we do our part to stay involved with local causes in Austin. Below are some of the organizations we volunteer with, or for which provide pro-bono services.
Political Asylum Project of Austin (PAPA) - PAPA is a Central Texas nonprofit that promotes justice for immigrants and refugees by providing free and low-cost legal services and education. Kirk sits on the board of PAPA and is currently helping with developing an IT and database management strategy to help PAPA accomplish a new scale of operations.
Theater Action Project - The Theatre Action Project creates and promotes socially relevant, interactive theatre and educational programming that ignites community dialogue, self-discovery and social change. Since 1997, TAP has provided a creative, fun and meaningful way for thousands of young people to build their self-esteem and tackle difficult issues like bullying, conflict resolution, and dating violence. Kirk currently volunteers with TAP on helping address a number of back-office data management issues.
Knowbility - Knowbility's mission is to support the independence of children and adults with disabilities by promoting the use and improving the availability of accessible information technology. Twice a year Knowbility hosts competitions around the country that pit groups of web developers against each other to developer accessible web sites for nonprofits and local artists. Kirk has participated in the Austin competition in the Fall of 2007 and the Spring of 2008. Austin-area nonprofits should take advantage of the opportunity to have a Section 508 compliant website developed for $100.
AISD Mentor Program - The Austin ISD mentor program matches students with a community member who meets with them once a week for at least a year, and often longer. Students in this program often gain confidence, better attitudes, and have fewer absences and less drug or alcohol use as the mentor helps guide them about career and life choices. The mentor learns about the challenges facing young people today, and can enjoy a close bond with the student as they grow.
We have big plans to expand pro-bono services as well as our volunteerism program over the coming months. Stay in the know by subscribing to our RSS feed to get updates as we post them on our site.
